Our Commitment to Getting More Girls in the Game in 2026
As we look ahead to 2026, Go Play is recommitting to getting more girls into sports and supporting them to stay involved. This commitment aligns with the Aspen Institute’s Project Play call to action to increase girls’ participation in youth sports nationwide. For us, this is not theoretical. It shows up in real families and real moments when a girl either gets to play or is left out.
Why This Matters
Girls drop out of sports at higher rates and at younger ages than boys. Cost, limited program options, lack of role models, and social pressure all play a role. When girls lose access to sports, they lose opportunities to build confidence, community, and a sense of belonging.
For the communities Go Play serves, especially those with fewer recreation options, these missed opportunities can have lasting impacts.
Our Commitment in 2026
In 2026, Go Play is focusing on more than just access. Our goal is to help girls feel welcomed, supported, and confident enough to keep playing.
Through our Youth Sports for All (YSFA) program, we are committed to:
Removing financial barriers so cost is not the reason a girl cannot play
Providing equipment so families are not choosing between essentials and sports gear
Helping girls find programs that match their interests and comfort level
Supporting multi-season participation, not just one-time registration
These efforts are about helping girls return, build skills, and feel like they belong.
Answering the Project Play Call
The Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative has made it clear that reversing the decline in girls’ sports participation will require intentional, local action. Go Play sees this as a responsibility we take seriously.
In 2026, we are prioritizing:
Partnerships with leagues that offer girls-only teams and beginner-friendly entry points
Stronger support at common drop-off moments, especially after a first season
Increased visibility of women leaders, coaches, and role models in youth sports
Ongoing feedback from girls and families to help programs feel welcoming and safe
Looking Ahead
Go Play is committed to being part of the answer. In 2026, we are focused on making sure more girls step onto the field, feel like they belong, and experience the confidence and joy that come from play.
Together, we can help more girls stay in the game.
