5 Ways to Get Your Kids Off Their Screens and Back in the Game
If you've ever heard "just one more minute" from the couch, congratulations. You're raising a normal kid.
Screens are everywhere, and honestly, we're not here to pretend they aren't fun. But sometimes it's nice to remind kids that there are things in the real world that are just as entertaining. Like scoring a goal, racing a friend, or spending twenty minutes trying to find where that wild airball went.
Here are a few ways to swap some screen time for game time.
1. Don't Say "Let's Go Exercise"
Nobody has ever gotten excited about hearing, "Who wants to get some exercise?" Instead, try:
"Want to see if you can beat me in a race?"
"Bet you can't make that shot."
"First one to the tree wins."
It's the exact same activity. The marketing is just better.
2. Bring a Ball. Any Ball.
Soccer ball. Basketball. Football. Tennis ball. Kickball. It honestly doesn't matter.
A ball has a magical ability to create an activity out of absolutely nothing. One minute you're standing around. The next minute you're inventing a game with seven made-up rules and arguing about whether that point counted. That's what summer is all about.
3. Let Them Challenge You
Kids love beating adults. Well, kids love trying to beat adults. Challenge them to a shooting contest. A juggling competition. A sprint. A game of HORSE. You don't even have to win. In fact, strategically losing once in a while can buy you a shocking amount of goodwill.
4. Meet Up With Friends
You can spend thirty minutes convincing your kid to go outside, or you can tell them their friend is already there. One of those options is significantly easier. Sports are fun. Sports with friends are even better. Whether it's a pickup soccer game, shooting hoops, or just running around until everyone is tired and covered in grass, everything gets more exciting when friends are involved.
5. Go Somewhere Built for Play
Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out what to do once you're outside. That's why places that are built for sports and recreation matter. A good field has a way of turning "I'm bored" into a soccer game, a relay race, or a group of kids making up a sport that probably shouldn't exist but somehow does.
You don't need a perfectly planned activity. Sometimes you just need a little space and a reason to move.
The Secret? Make It Fun.
The goal isn't to wage war on screens. The goal is to remind kids that there are a lot of fun things competing for their attention outside, too! A game with friends. A pickup match. A race across a field. A chance to try something new. And if they happen to forget about their phone for a few hours because they're too busy playing, we'd call that a win.
